In 1937, South Dakota established a state poet laureate position, which is currently held by Christine Stewart, who was appointed to a four-year term in 2019. Stewart, who writes under the name Christine Stewart-Nunez, has published five volumes of poetry. She teaches creative writing courses and is coordinator of South Dakota State's creative writing program.
